Europe Divided as Spain Reiterates ‘No to War’ Position Amid Iran Crisis

Spain’s rejection of military involvement in the U.S.-led offensive against Iran has intensified broader divisions within Europe over how to respond to the escalating Middle East conflict.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said Spain will prioritize diplomacy and international law over military escalation, reiterating that global security challenges cannot be solved through force alone. He also called on the United States, Israel, and Iran to return to negotiations before the conflict expands further across the region.

Sánchez’s remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly criticized Spain and threatened economic retaliation, including blocking trade between the two countries. Trump described Spain as a “terrible partner” after Madrid refused to allow U.S. forces to use the Rota and Morón military bases for offensive operations against Iran.

Spanish officials responded by arguing that international law prevents Spain from supporting military actions they consider unauthorized. Government sources said Spain remains committed to NATO cooperation but will not participate in operations that could escalate regional instability.

The conflict has also exposed growing political tensions inside the European Union. While some EU states have shown support for stronger military responses to Iran, others are calling for strategic independence from U.S. foreign policy.

European officials warn that prolonged conflict could further destabilize global energy markets, drive up oil prices, and disrupt international trade routes, particularly through strategic waterways in the Middle East.

Defense analysts say the war’s outcome remains uncertain, but they agree the crisis is reshaping global alliances and testing the future of transatlantic relations between Europe and the United States.
